A subtitle line starts with two pound signs

This is a paragraph. A paragraph should have a blank line before and after it. You can just keep typing, and the words will wrap at the end of the line. When you get to the end of the paragraph, hit enter twice to leave a blank line after it.

A lesser heading starts with three pound signs

Other formatting options

Inside a paragraph, there are some things that you can do to bring emphasis to text. For a start, if you surround a word or phrase with a single set of asterisks, it will be in italics. Note that underlining typically has special meaning on a web site. Bold can be done by surrounding text in two asterisks. Also, you can surround text with three asterisks and it will make the text bold and underlined.

There is a special case. The special case is a picture. If you put a single set of asterisks around a picture, it will put the picture on the left. Normally pictures will be on the right.

You can add a line with a series of dashes.

Special formatting techniques:

If you add two spaces at the end of a line
(which you can’t see)
You will be able to
force a line break like this.

If you start a paragraph with a greater than (shift .), the paragraph appears indented. This is useful for two things: a block quote (or a quoted Bible verse, maybe), or for a poem. With poems, you will want to put two spaces at the end of the line to break the lines correctly.

Mary had a little lamb,
His fleece was white as snow.
And every where that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.

Lists

You can make a bulleted or numbered list.

  • To make a bulleted list, start each line with an asterisk.
  • Put a blank line before and after the bulleted list.
  • You can still have italics and bold in a bulleted list.

You can also make numbered lists:

  1. Numbered lists start with a number and a period.
  2. These also need to have a blank line before and after them.
  3. Typically a numbered list is used if the items need to be done in order, or if the items have a rank.

Links

You can make a hyperlink as follows: Nasa site or The connector. Notice that the words that appear on the screen are in square brackets and the address of the link is in parentheses.

Some guy To link a picture, the process is almost identical. Add an exclamation point in front of a picture. A short description of the picture goes in the brackets, and the filename goes in the parentheses. If you used an attachment, the file name appears in the attachment section. The computer is picky.
